Trends in Retaining Wall for Warsaw, IN and Syracuse, IN

Retaining wall blocks add dimension and definition to your outdoor living spaces. Whether utilizing a retaining wall to control sloped hillsides in your lawn or lakeside cottage, or to add additional space for a brick paver patio or outdoor living space, retaining walls can help in many ways and help solve your landscape problems.

Terraced Retaining Walls

Retaining walls can be used to convert a sloped lawn or backyard into a space that is now usable for the whole family. You can also terrace retaining walls to create level spaces for planting beds or additional patio space.

Raised Gardens with Retaining Walls

A new trend that we are finding in Warsaw, Syracuse, Leesburg, Ft. Wayne, Columbia City, Winona Lake and Culver is the construction of raised gardens. Raised Gardens can take your landscaping to a new level and add alot of visual interest and color with perennial plants to your existing landscape or patio area.

Outdoor Space Room Definition

The use of seating walls, pillars, and the combination of the two can help define your outdoor brick paver patio in Warsaw, IN and Syracuse, IN.

Outdoor Kitchens

Patios bring families closer together.

Outdoor kitchens are probably the fastest growing segment of all the hardscape installations we install in Warsaw, IN and Syracuse, IN. These outdoor kitchen and bar areas can be completely customized to allow the best use of space for large or small areas.

Pillars & Columns

Mulch In Your Warsaw, IN Landscaping

Mulching your landscape beds in Warsaw, IN and Syracuse, IN will help prevent weed growth.

Installing mulch in your landscape beds every year is a great idea for many reasons.  Mulch can be added to your landscaping during any time of the year if you live or own a lake house in Warsaw or Syracuse.

Most people in Warsaw believe that mulch attracts bugs and insects that can damage the home or landscape.  That is somewhat true only if the mulch is an inferior product!  At WLM, Inc. we use only a shredded hardwood mulch and not left over construction debris that is ground up, dyed and sold as a landscape mulch.  Not all mulch is the same so be careful which supplier or contractor you choose for your mulching needs.

How to tell if you have bad mulch:

  • mulch floats when it rains
  • color fades quickly
  • large chunks of wood in the mulch
  • trash and other debris in the mulch

Benefits of Mulching Your Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN Landscaping:

  • Retains soil moisture up to 75% and reduces watering
  • Mulch decomposes over time and turns to a compost which feeds the plants
  • Makes the landscape look brand new every season
  • Reduces weed germination and growth
  • Invites desirable insects to your landscape beds
  • Reduces heat stress to landscaping plant material
  • Allows Warsaw homeowners the ability to plant additional flowers with less effort

Every spring and into summer, our crews are out in the Warsaw, Winona Lake, Syracuse, Leesburg, Ft. Wayne, Columbia City, Culver and North Webster areas installing mulch for our clients.  If you need help keeping your landscaping beds cleaned up and mulched, please reach out to our office located in Warsaw, IN.

Thistle: How To Combat It In Your Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN Landscaping

Thistle in your Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN Landscaping

“I have a problem with Thistle in my landscape beds at our lake house in Syracuse, IN.  How do I get rid of them?”  —  Lake Wawasee Client of WLM, Inc.

Canadian Thistle is an invasive weed reaching 2-5 feet in height that is difficult to eradicate because it is a perennial, in addition to being a prolific seed producer.  The seeds can survive for more than 20 years and germinate quickly when conditions are just right in Warsaw, IN  and Syracuse, IN.  This plant also has an extensive underground root system that will germinate more weeds.

It’s a cool season perennial and actively grows in the spring and fall in the Warsaw, Syracuse, Culver, Ft. Wayne, Winona Lake, Leesburg, and Columbia City areas.  Growth slows during hot weather like we have during our summers.  Flowers are generally produced in early to mid June with seeds fully developed by early July in the Warsaw, IN areas.  The timing can vary each year depending on growing conditions.  As we have seen here in the Warsaw, IN area, landscapes woke up later than most years even though we had a very mild winter for the second year in a row.

Controlling Thistle:  A key to controlling Thistle in your Warsaw, IN landscaping is to treat early before it has a chance to produce seeds and develop a large network of rhizomes under the ground.  If you lack the time to take more aggressive  action in summer, then make sure to cut off the flowers before they seed.  Mowing and repeated cutting of the plants will prevent the production of seeds and slowly starve the plant, but will not likely kill them.  The extensive root system means that you will need to dig out the roots for a LONG period of time as they will quickly start to come back and make more.

Herbicide Treatment:  We have found with our Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN customers that treating thistle with herbicide works really well along with repeat Landscape Maintenance Visits.  Fall is probably the best time to treat thistle with herbicide if you own a house in Warsaw, Syracuse, Winona Lake, Culver, Ft. Wayne or Columbia City.  Another good time to treat is in the spring.  There are selective herbicide options but we warn that spraying these chemicals without experience can cause other landscaping issues like killing other desirable plant material.  Spraying thistle in your landscaping will also require several treatments over a long period of time and we have found that homeowners in Warsaw, IN and Syracuse, IN just don’t have the time and forget to spray on a regular schedule.

A healthy and well maintained lawn and landscaping in Warsaw and Syracuse will promote dense turf and healthy plants that will compete with these weeds.

Tips For Planning the ‘Phased’ Landscape Project in Warsaw & Syracuse

Planning The Perfect Project for Your Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN Landscape

Sometimes, it’s just not feasible to build your dream outdoor living space all at once in Warsaw, IN or Syracuse, IN.  When building one phase at a time, proper upfront planning can save time, money and headaches.

Tip #1:  Choose a qualified design/build contractor

A large outdoor living brick paver patio for your Warsaw, Culver, Ft. Wayne, Columbia City, Syracuse, Winona Lake, or Leesburg home is an important investment.  Don’t trust that investments to just anyone.  With a smaller job, an installation contractor is fine, but in order to properly plan a job that will be built in phased, you’ll need someone with design skills.  For more information about how to choose the right Landscape Contractor, visit this blog site from Belgard Hardscapes, Tips for Choosing a Hardscape Contractor.

Tip #2:  Design your complete dream outdoor space upfront

You can always scale it back, but it can be much less costly to design something that is never built than to retrofit a space later.  This is especially true if future footings or underground utilities will be needed.  Many contractors charge a fee for the design, but often credit back that fee when the work is done.  WLM, Inc. does charge for their designs and also credits that fee back.  WLM, Inc. also has the ability to create 3-D renderings and Fly-Through Videos that will allow you to virtually walk through the design so you can truly get a feel for how you would live in that space.  This can help you catch potential issues with the layout prior to construction.  This service is only available to Belgard Authorized Contractors.  Check out some of our Fly-Through Videos.

Tip #3:  Pre-plan for future phases

Outdoor Living

When you’re planning an outdoor living space for your home in Warsaw, Winona Lake or Syracuse, think of what you would plan for an indoor living space.  Think of lighting, music, televisions, cooking needs, and gas or electric appliances.  Consider the local climate in Warsaw and Syracuse and at the lake and about keeping warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  Running utilities all at once, including those that you won’t need until later, can be a huge cost savings.  Also, if you plan to add other elements like a fire pit, fire place, outdoor bar, pergola, hot tub, etc., it’s good to plan those things out now rather than later.

Tip #4:  Consider your lifestyle

When planning out the phases, discuss your lifestyle with your contractor so that you can plan the phases that will work best with your budget.  For example, if a design includes alot of elements it could look like this:  1. Patio  2. Kitchen  3. Fireplace  4. Seating Walls  5. Lighting and Sound.

Tip #5:  Look for opportunities to reduce the number of phases

Efficiency can be achieved by building in fewer phases.  We offer the Belgard Preferred Payment Program, which can help you build more at one time and spread the cost out over several months with same as cash financing options.
