Eco Friendly Brick Pavers In Warsaw, IN

Eco Friendly Brick Pavers or Permeable Pavers are not new to the Warsaw and Winona Lake area and they certainly are not new to brick paving. Eco Friendly Brick Pavers are gaining alot of attention and momentum across the country as a solution to alot of hard surface problems like runoff, drainage, retention ponds, pollution, and erosion just to name a few.

Eco Friendly, or Permeable Brick Pavers, are a great solution to your brick paving needs if you need to create additional parking spots for overflow traffic at your Warsaw, In house or lake cottage but don’t want to give up the look of your green space. Turfstone buy Belgard, is a great option for additional parking spaces at your lake house in Warsaw, In or Winona Lake, IN but want to keep as much yard space as possible.

Some homeowners in Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN would like to have a surface that looks more like brick pavers instead of a green lawn area.  Permeable Pavers come in a large variety of styles and colors.  Unilock has a great product line that provides homeowners who desire a permeable brick paver area.

Permeable Pavers are designed to allow almost all of the water from rainfall to be able to be reclaimed back into the existing soils.  Permeable Pavers allow for larger gaps between the brick pavers which allows water to drain through the surface into a base material underneath.  Rather than rainwater running off over the top of the traditional asphalt driveway or parking lot into a storm water retention system, the water seeps through the permeable pavers system and through a series of open graded layers of base material.  This base layer can accommodate a tremendous  amount of water depending on the deign of the system.  Water can also be collected and used for things like irrigation or washing cars.

Planning a garden in Warsaw, IN or Syracuse, IN has numerous variables – location, sun, and water to name a few.  However, the most important question may be, “What plants will grow well in my Warsaw, In or Syracuse, IN climate?”

Climate can be described as an aggregate of weather conditions for a specific region like Warsaw or Syracuse, averaged over a relatively long period of time.  Climate is what the weather is statistically likely to be during any certain time of year in Warsaw.  Weather is what you think about when deciding how to dress for the day when you live in Warsaw or Syracuse.

Wayne, Columbia City and Culver areas with the magnificent color of fall foliage.  October in Warsaw, IN and Syracuse, IN is one of the busiest time of our landscaping season only second to April through June.

Our fall clean up and landscape maintenance work will culminate in December, when hard pruning begins, but for now it’s all hands on deck to get our fall project work completed and fall leaf clean ups finished.

Here is a list of things that your Warsaw, IN landscape will need as we move into fall.

  1. Fall in Warsaw, IN brings some of the best weather conditions for starting new plantings.  As the weather cools and the days get shorter, many plants grow roots deeper into the soils more easily so now is a great time to install a new landscape, renovate your existing landscape, or transplant some of your existing plant material.  Now is also a good time to overseed your lawn.
  2. Propagate.  Are there any plants in your Syracuse, IN landscaping that you would like to reproduce?  How about taking cutting before the first frost?  Now is a good time to do both if you live in Warsaw, IN or Syracuse, IN.
  3. Germinate.  Fall is a great time to plant seeds or overseed your lawn.  Now is also a good time to start a wildflower garden from seed.
  4. Frost Protection. In Warsaw, IN, frost and potential freezing isn’t far off and your delicate plants will need some protection if you want them to look good next season.
  5. Feeding.  If you own a home in Warsaw or Syracuse, fall is a great time to fertilize your plants so they aren’t nutrient deficient next spring.  Use fertilizers made specifically for the plant.  Fall is also the best time of year to feed your lawn.  Need a lawn fertilization program?  We can help you there as well.
  6. Weeds.  Don’t be afraid to put down some more pre-emergent herbicide in your landscape beds that will give you even better weed control next spring and summer.

Mulch In Your Warsaw, IN Landscaping

Mulching your landscape beds in Warsaw, IN and Syracuse, IN will help prevent weed growth.

Installing mulch in your landscape beds every year is a great idea for many reasons.  Mulch can be added to your landscaping during any time of the year if you live or own a lake house in Warsaw or Syracuse.

Most people in Warsaw believe that mulch attracts bugs and insects that can damage the home or landscape.  That is somewhat true only if the mulch is an inferior product!  At WLM, Inc. we use only a shredded hardwood mulch and not left over construction debris that is ground up, dyed and sold as a landscape mulch.  Not all mulch is the same so be careful which supplier or contractor you choose for your mulching needs.

How to tell if you have bad mulch:

  • mulch floats when it rains
  • color fades quickly
  • large chunks of wood in the mulch
  • trash and other debris in the mulch

Benefits of Mulching Your Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN Landscaping:

  • Retains soil moisture up to 75% and reduces watering
  • Mulch decomposes over time and turns to a compost which feeds the plants
  • Makes the landscape look brand new every season
  • Reduces weed germination and growth
  • Invites desirable insects to your landscape beds
  • Reduces heat stress to landscaping plant material
  • Allows Warsaw homeowners the ability to plant additional flowers with less effort

Every spring and into summer, our crews are out in the Warsaw, Winona Lake, Syracuse, Leesburg, Ft. Wayne, Columbia City, Culver and North Webster areas installing mulch for our clients.  If you need help keeping your landscaping beds cleaned up and mulched, please reach out to our office located in Warsaw, IN.

Thistle: How To Combat It In Your Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN Landscaping

Thistle in your Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN Landscaping

“I have a problem with Thistle in my landscape beds at our lake house in Syracuse, IN.  How do I get rid of them?”  —  Lake Wawasee Client of WLM, Inc.

Canadian Thistle is an invasive weed reaching 2-5 feet in height that is difficult to eradicate because it is a perennial, in addition to being a prolific seed producer.  The seeds can survive for more than 20 years and germinate quickly when conditions are just right in Warsaw, IN  and Syracuse, IN.  This plant also has an extensive underground root system that will germinate more weeds.

It’s a cool season perennial and actively grows in the spring and fall in the Warsaw, Syracuse, Culver, Ft. Wayne, Winona Lake, Leesburg, and Columbia City areas.  Growth slows during hot weather like we have during our summers.  Flowers are generally produced in early to mid June with seeds fully developed by early July in the Warsaw, IN areas.  The timing can vary each year depending on growing conditions.  As we have seen here in the Warsaw, IN area, landscapes woke up later than most years even though we had a very mild winter for the second year in a row.

Controlling Thistle:  A key to controlling Thistle in your Warsaw, IN landscaping is to treat early before it has a chance to produce seeds and develop a large network of rhizomes under the ground.  If you lack the time to take more aggressive  action in summer, then make sure to cut off the flowers before they seed.  Mowing and repeated cutting of the plants will prevent the production of seeds and slowly starve the plant, but will not likely kill them.  The extensive root system means that you will need to dig out the roots for a LONG period of time as they will quickly start to come back and make more.

Herbicide Treatment:  We have found with our Warsaw, IN & Syracuse, IN customers that treating thistle with herbicide works really well along with repeat Landscape Maintenance Visits.  Fall is probably the best time to treat thistle with herbicide if you own a house in Warsaw, Syracuse, Winona Lake, Culver, Ft. Wayne or Columbia City.  Another good time to treat is in the spring.  There are selective herbicide options but we warn that spraying these chemicals without experience can cause other landscaping issues like killing other desirable plant material.  Spraying thistle in your landscaping will also require several treatments over a long period of time and we have found that homeowners in Warsaw, IN and Syracuse, IN just don’t have the time and forget to spray on a regular schedule.

A healthy and well maintained lawn and landscaping in Warsaw and Syracuse will promote dense turf and healthy plants that will compete with these weeds.
